Modern Sons

I remember, golden fields of grain.  We’d pray for sun on Sunday and if it came we’d pray for rain.

Hundred years of towns folk planted seed within these fields.  And if the prayers on Sunday worked, they’d get a decent yield.

My dad bought his first tractor, back in 1963. A farmer like his father, like he wanted me to be.

Road that Massey Ferguson when I was just a boy and I must admit back then, the thought of farming brought me Joy.

You saw Grandpa’s happiness, when dad and I would help at harvest.  Sunsets, breakdowns dust and all the chores.

Daddy he would say to me that farming life is living free and one day all this land will all be yours.

Chorus:

But if you shed a tear for country folk I ask you pay no mind.  Modern sons leave for the city and put farming things behind.  Pardon to the men who worked this land before my time.  Modern sons leave for the city and put farming things behind.

1997, was my graduation year and after that came college, where I became an engineer.

Years flew by so quickly I think Daddy always thought, education is important but the farm is what I’d want.

Told him unexpectedly, I got a job in Calgary.  They’d like me to start soon as I can.

He realized right then and there his father’s farm would soon be bare.  Later he made plans to rent the land.

Chorus:

But if you shed a tear for country folk I ask you pay no mind.  Modern sons leave for the city and put farming things behind.  Pardon to the men who worked this land before my time.  Modern sons leave for the city and put farming things behind.

Modern sons leave for the city and put farming things behind.  So if you see a farm without a plow, I’d ask you to be kind.  A fathers dream is precious although different then mine, modern sons leave for the city and put farming things behind.  Modern sons leave for the city and put farming things behind.

The Queens Hotel

Embrace the reoccurring scene, where you lay fast asleep at night and dream about the good things in your life.

See the time through distant eye’s, some people laugh some people cry, as they dwell upon the bad things in their lives.

But where do we go from here things aren’t coming in clear.

Whether men run or fight they’re still looking for a new song to write.

Chorus:

Up all night in the queens hotel, throw another coin in the wishing well

Find a friend and shake his hand, travel to a distant land

Make a place where I call home, loving you is all I’ve known

Take my hand you’re not alone tonight, everything will be alright. Everything will be alright.

Sister Beth raised well from a child, can’t you tell her Christian background

got fire, desire, face like the virgin and legs like a woman

But she hides them well you can tell. Extinguishing her flame but I wouldn’t say Gods to blame.

But where do we go from here, what you don’t know you always fear

Whether men run or fight they’re still looking for a new song to write.

Chorus:

Up all night in the queens hotel, throw another coin in the wishing well

Find a friend and shake his hand, travel to a distant land

Make a place where I call home, loving you is all I’ve known

Take my hand you’re not alone tonight, everything will be alright. Everything will be alright.

Beggars outside looking in, paper thin sees his reflection in the glass.

Flash back from the past, the boy inside has his eyes.

Where did I go wrong he cry’s

Where do we go from here I feel the end is drawing near

Whether men run or fight they’re still looking for a new song to write.

Chorus:

Up all night in the queens hotel, throw another coin in the wishing well

Find a friend and shake his hand, travel to a distant land

Make a place where I call home, loving you is all I’ve known

Take my hand you’re not alone tonight, don’t get taken by surprise, it’s your demise, take a deep breath and live your life. Live your life.  Live your life. Live your life.

Buy It All Baby

I new a girl with golden hair thought I’d love her till the end

Until I found out to my despair all she wanted was to be my friend

She found a guy much better than I, had money to spend.

Guess that’s the reason all the women I’m pleasing steal my heart then leave me to mend.

Chorus:

If I had but just one dime I’d give it to a pretty little girl so fine,

If your that women lets waste no time buy it all baby gonna make you mine

I knew a woman her name was Eve, prettiest girl in town

thought that she could be with me til another fella came around

He bought her rings, he bought her pearls, never became my girl

Guess that’s because all the women I love look at me and want no part of

Chorus:

If I had but just one dime I’d give it to a pretty little girl so fine,

If your that women lets waste no time buy it all baby gonna make you mine

Interlude:

I know she’s out there somewhere the girl I’m looking for

She’ll love me for just what I am and not what’s in the store

So I met a girl who’s poor as pie, thought she could be the one.

But she ran around with another guy when all my dollars were done

So if you never have the money, your never going to find yourself a pretty little honey

I’m feeling low all the women I know empty my wallet then they up and go

Chorus:

If I had but just one dime I’d give it to a pretty little girl so fine,

If your that women lets waste no time buy it all baby gonna make you mine yeah. If I had but just one dime I’d give it to

a pretty little girl so fine if your that women I’ll treat you kind, buy it all baby gonna make you mine.

The Cliche

Well I’ve heard a cliché that good people say, don’t judge a book by its cover.

I’ve been here and there I’ve learned people don’t care about themselves or even each other.

But don’t be surprised when you look in their hearts, and see the confusion that keeps them apart

You are wrong we are right so continue your fight while the same cry’s to heaven recite

To judge one another is meant for no other be mindful of what you are saying

If god and his word are so seldom heard than be mindful to whom you are praying

And I find it ironic that a heart that’s so filled would stab at his brother till all the bloods spilled

don’t know what else to say except that same cliché and I hope he sees another way

Interlude:

And the words you must follow are written in stone, sing with your heart pay no mind to the tone

Reach out your hand promise don’t let me go till the day that you take me home, till the day that you take me home

Better Than

She said hey babe you look like hell.  Here’s a kiss, here’s how to do your hair.  I’ll even pick out your clothes to wear.

I can teach you how to sing, show you what a woman will bring.  Even let you buy me, that perfect diamond ring.

Chorus:

Can’t you see I’m not seeking redemption, too late now to be your better man.

Fooled yourself into that mis-intention. Teach you to teach me to be better than.

She says that she’s in love with me. Wants to start a family. But I’m not sure this is, what loves supposed to be.

Don’t want to cause her pain, part of me will miss her ways. But all I do is change, all she does is rearrange.

Chorus:

Can’t you see I’m not seeking redemption, too late now to be your better man.

Fooled yourself into that mis-intention. Teach you to teach me to be better than.

Can’t you see I’m not seeking redemption, too late now to be your better man.

Fooled yourself into that mis-intention. Teach you to teach me to be better than. Teach you to teach me yeah.

The Outlaw

Billy was a troubled child, ever since that day.  His mother got the fever and she slowly died away.

While Bill felt lost and gone his brother Tom was strong, tried his best to help Bill carry on.

Daddy turned to whisky, after mamma passed.  While Tom worked where he could to try to make the money last.

But Bill he took to wondering and roaming town to town and often it was trouble that he found.

He stole his first rooster, when he was very young.  Soon after that came horses which he traded for a gun.

Then one day Bill rode out of town and left his dust behind, but Tom was sore he never said goodbye.

Chorus 1:

Oh Tommy bro I’m feeling low, I gotta hit the road. I’ve never been much for goodbyes, instead I’ll leave this note

If the law men come and ask for me my brother don’t you dwell.  Just tell them bastards they can go to hell.

Tom soon heard the rumors as everybody did.  A bank was robbed in Yuma by a red haired wild kid.

And Tom deep down inside him felt he let his brother down.  So he set out to try and turn Bill around.

After months of searching Tom heard a barman tell.  The law’d caught up with Bill & they had locked him in a cell.

But the sheriff beat Bill bloody so Tom hardly recognized and that’s when all the rage rose in his eyes.

A madness overtook him like he had never known.  Before he knew what happened on his fists the blood had shown.

And he couldn’t say how many times he bashed that sherif’s head.  But when he stopped Tom saw that he was dead.

Chorus 2:

Oh Billy boy don’t act so coy and offer me your thanks, you’ve been sleeping late & drinking straight & robbing all the banks.

Because you are my brother I will spring you from this cell, but after this Bill you can go to hell.

Tom was shocked and terrified by the killing that he’d done.   He’d never harmed a soul before & he knew he had to run.

But the deputy walked in just as Bill slipped out the side, saw Tom standing where the sheriff lied.

The deputy was rattled cause the sheriff was a friend.  So he thrust his pistol right at Tom, said it’s time to meet your end.

And he led Tom to a tree and put a noose around his neck and tied his bloody hands behind his back.

Tom began to weep because he knew his time was near.  He’d finally found his brother now he seemed to disappear.

Then a single gunshot fired and the deputy fell dead then Tom saw Bill and this is what he said.

Chorus 3:

Oh Tommy Bro don’t act so slow upon your horse so high.  This man was going to hang you and for that he had to die.

And because you are my brother I will cut you from this tree but know this now you’re an outlaw just like me.

Grey

When she said I do, never thought I don’t. Told her that he will, but now he won’t.

What do you even say, would it change things either way, do we fight for us for yet another day.

Living love is easy but life gets in the way, is this the case or just another dumb cliché.

Should she find another, lover.  Or does she hold on till all feelings gone.

Chorus:

Winter will hunger for beautiful colour and feast till there’s only grey.

So she must take her chances with foolish romances or alone forever she’ll stay. Alone forever she’ll stay.

Can someone love too much. The heart it feels the warning but the head is full of lust.

Again and again then bust.  Keep trading empty promises for a little loving touch.

Chorus:

Winter will hunger for beautiful colour and feast till there’s only grey.

So she must take her chances with foolish romances or alone forever she’ll stay. Alone forever she’ll stay.

One wants his freedom, two I had to end, three only wants to be friends.

Every year they all get older but no one seems to change and I’m always the one who’s blamed.

Chorus:

Winter will hunger for beautiful colour and feast till there’s only grey.

So she must take her chances with foolish romances or alone forever she’ll stay. Alone forever she’ll stay

Interlude:

And she keeps waiting for that loving man. Wanting someone to hold her hand

Yeah Her dreams they got written in the sand, she keeps waiting for that loving man.  But he never comes.

He never comes.  He never comes.

Chorus 2:

Winter will hunger for beautiful colour and feast till there’s only grey.

So if grey is your colour I will be your lover and together forever we’ll stay. Together forever we’ll stay.

Loss of Innocence

Help me identify this feeling, where life is lost and love is bleeding

When happy thoughts become deceiving. I am hurt… and I need healing.  I need healing

In two we will confide, June 11th put aside

From your hopes and dreams there is no place to hide. I am numb…..and I have cried.  I have cried

Chorus 1:

It’s a man’s role to be strong, to say what’s done is done

But I don’t want to feel content, for the loss of an unborn son

Try again, your young, your healthy, common percent. Only words that won’t prepare you

For a loss of innocence, a loss of innocence.

Eyes are ridden with her tears, expectations are unclear

What was once forgone is now not held so dear. She has doubts….She has fears…She has fears

Chorus 2:

A girl becomes a wife, and will become a mother

But the pain is in her worry, from the loss of an unborn daughter

The magic may be lost, hope can cast a spell again. And put an end to all her worry

And the loss of her innocence….a loss of innocence

K-sera What we will be

The future is unknown to me

Eva’s Song

I don’t know you but you belong to me, when two hearts are one there’s always room for three

Never thought of something missing, till you came into my world, kicking

Now I hold you for the very first time and see how tiny your hand is in mine

Never thought you’d make me better, you bring me so much joy when were together

Chorus:

So I will rock you to sleep and sing this lullaby, offer comfort when you weep now and for the rest of your life

When your eye’s look into mine, do you see that I’m your father.

I’m by your side you are my pride you are all mine, you are my daughter. You are my daughter

I was there for your first breath of life and I am here when your wailing in the night

But that’s when my heart gets in a hurry. Having you is a license to worry.

Chorus:

So I will rock you to sleep and sing this lullaby, offer comfort when you weep now and for the rest of your life

When your eye’s look into mine, do you see that I’m your father.

I’m by your side you are my pride you are all mine, you are my daughter. You are my daughter

Interlude:

But day by day your growing and if people tell me right.  Too soon you’ll be a woman, beautiful and bright

So I’ll ask you for a favor and run my fingers through your curls, will you always be your daddy’s little girl.

Chorus:

So I can rock you to sleep and sing this lullaby, offer comfort when you weep now and for the rest of your life

When your eye’s look into mine, do you see that I’m your father.

I’m by your side you are my pride you are all mine, you are my daughter. You are my daughter

Something That I can Believe

Well the man with no home he has nothing at all, but the man with no soul he has further to fall

We become our possessions the large and the small. Give me something that I can believe.

Oh soldiers of war don’t turn in the grave, it was through your own blood that the nation was saved.

Freedom to forget on Remembrance Day.  Give me something that I can believe.

And what of our children will they grow in the sound.  Of laughter and loving and memories abound.

Seems all we do now is just drive them around.  Give me something that I can believe.

Give me something that I can believe in, humanity, liberty, children of men.

when idle we sit then the sooner we die, in the end, we’ll ask ourselves why

When they speak of the son they don’t understand.  How history changed because of a man.

They hear the word God so they throw up their hands.  Give me something that I can believe.

Oh Thomas’ why must you look with your eyes.  And feel with your hands put your fingers in sides.

Only faith can explain what your senses deny.  Give me something that I can believe.

We all want something to believe in, trust in the love that comes from within

May it burn in our hearts forever to last, may it help us to reconcile the past.

When you listen to this song I hope you will hear.  Not the melody only but the words that ring clear.

From poets and prophets come life souvenirs, and maybe something that you can believe.

Boy before the man

I knew the boy before I knew the man. Yeah I knew the boy before I knew the man

Boy said man I’m gonna get real far. Gonna make my living playing this guitar.

I knew the boy before I knew the man.

Run boy run boy run from suits and ties, and find a girl with pretty eyes.  Lay her down let her watch the skies, you both can talk to God until the early morning rise.

Hot damn I’m feeling fine, let’s share another glass from this bottle of cheap wine.  But all good things end in time.

Cause I knew the boy before I knew the man.  Yeah I knew the boy before I knew the man.

Man said this boys got no cares, wonder how he’s ever gonna get there.  Boy says 96 cavalier.

Go boy go boy, life’s a race.  Don’t worry yet on where you place. Between the lines and you’ll do great. You’re fast enough you won’t be late yeah.

Hot damn, I’m feeling nice let’s fill up the tank and drive all through the night.  We’ll get there in good time.

Cause I knew the boy before I knew the man.  Yeah I knew the boy before I knew the man.

Today is just another chance to try and be cool in any way we can, yeah I knew the boy before I knew the man

Whoa boy slow boy make it last, no one ever said you had to grow up so fast.  Tie your line make your cast and sit there on the shore and just relax yeah.

Hot damn I’m feeling great I got clear blue water and plenty of bait, just living for today.

Run boy run boy run from suites and ties.  Run boy run boy run from suites and ties.

Run boy run boy run from suites and ties.  Run boy run boy run from suites and ties.

Let a little light shine in

Oh, let a little light shine in, let a little light shine in, take comfort in your friends.

Oh, let a little light shine in, let a little light shine in, for the darkness will leave us dead.

God damn he decides, I’ve put this off too long. Another sleepless night another love I’ve wronged

Oh, devils on his back. winning the attack, he loved her once but can’t recall and.

Oh, he said let a little light shine in, let a little light shine in, take comfort in your friends.

Oh, he said let a little light shine in, let a little light shine in, for the darkness will leave us dead.

She’ll never know what it is to mend, what life will send. Still got a picture on the wall of him.

Oh she prays she’s on her knees, all she sees is he’s with her and not with me.

Oh, she said let a little light shine in, let a little light shine in, take comfort in your friends.

Oh, she said let a little light shine in, let a little light shine in, for the darkness will leave us dead.

Should the son ever seize to shine. Would it bring me peace of mind, would the darkness rule in time.

Would I regret a family lost is there a deeper cost, or does the son keep shining through the darkness.

Oh I said, I’ll let a little light shine in, let a little light shine in, take comfort in my friends and

Yeah Oh I said, let a little light shine in, I’ll let a little light shine in, for the darkness will leave us dead.

Oh I said, I’ll let a little light shine in, I’ll let a little light shine in, take comfort in my friends

Oh I said, I’ll let a little light shine in, let a little light shine in, for the darkness will leave us dead.

I’d be dead.

The river

Only 14 years old.  No family no home. She’s been out on her own.  She’s been out in the cold.  And there isn’t a whole lot of room for hope.  Between the alcohol the hunger and the dope.  So she goes.

Won’t you lay your head down in the river to drown, all your sorrow in the sound of the water rushing round. You can open your eyes and see the blue under the skies, up above there’s a light you can touch after you die.  Won’t you lay me down in the river to drown, won’t you lay your head down in the river.

She steps through the door.  There’s gold on the wall.  Never been here before, not sure she belongs.  Her ears they hear a pleasant singing note.  She’s taken by the hand and given robes, so she goes.

Won’t you lay your head down in the river to drown, all your sorrow in the sound of the water rushing round.  You can open your eyes and see the blue under the skies, up above there’s a light you can touch after you die.  Won’t you lay me down in the river to drown, Won’t you lay me down in the river to drown, won’t you lay your head down in the river.

Face Down On The Ground

Jack be nimble Jack be quick. Jacky drank until he was sick.

No one cares about him round this town

Well I never thought it at the time but it got pretty cold that night.

No one made a move or made a sound. When we saw Jack face down on the ground.

Na na na, na na na, na na na, na na na na, yeah…

Got the call the next day, through the night Jack passed away.

Everyone cares now round this town.

I can see his body lying there as we walk by without a care.

Won’t someone stop what’s going down.

Jack face down on the ground.

Na na na, na na na, na na na, na na na na, yeah…

Sometimes alone I wonder if he awoke that night. Was he frightened did he realize, did he feel the winters bite.

If I had a second chance you know I’d make it right. Cause if I reached out for Jacky, would have saved Jacky’s life.

Through frozen winter skies I saw him rise, I saw him rise.  Through frozen winter skies I saw him rise, I saw him rise.

Na na na, na na na, na na na, na na na na, yeah…

Na na na, na na na, na na na, na na na na, yeah…

We All Need Someone

The first fear I recall was dark and hanging on the wall monsters in the closet, terrors in the night.

Called out for mom and dad, talked about the dream I had, they’d stay with me ‘til past my fright

Now that I’m older I’m scared of getting older, sitting idle until my time draws near

No use complaining, we best get entertaining because we all live with fear.

Yeah we all live with fear, if not within our hearts than with the ones that we hold dear

We get it in our news feeds, it’s blaring in our ears, yeah we all live with fear

Guilt is not the same as when we feel ashamed, ones in your head the others your soul

Sits dormant in your chest then rises to consciousness, takes the place of feeling whole

You tried forgiveness you tried love but all you feel is blame.

Time heals all wounds that’s what they say. But we all live with shame.

Yeah we all live with shame, been searching round this town trying to see a better way

Been trying to find Jesus, Been calling out his name

Cause we all live with shame.

We should take comfort that were not the only ones, that get these feelings and a longing for someone

To talk to on the phone, that smells and feels like home, someone so you don’t have to be alone.

Yeah we all need someone, to have and to hold or to cry until were done

Your friends and all your family, your daughters and your sons

Yeah we all need someone, yeah we all need someone, yeah we all need someone

Touch

Put your makeup on real nice and that dress that’s a little too tight

Step into my car were going out to paint the night

Half way through you say your tired but I see the sparkle in your eye

Saying take me home I know it’s wrong but god it feels so right

Feel the pounding of your heart, wishful everlasting rush.

Come on darling lay your head down everybody needs a little touch

And I know there are some times that I might ask you a little too much

But pretty baby let your hair down everybody needs a little touch

Girl I love the way you lie and that look that’s in your eye

You tell me start down at your toes and work my way up to your thigh’s

And all the time gets left behind, all our thoughts turn into none

Leaving you clutching your pillow case and me to turn you on.

Feel the pounding of your heart, wishful everlasting rush.

Come on darling lay your head down everybody needs a little touch

And I know there are sometimes that I might ask you a little too much

But pretty baby let your hair down everybody needs a little touch

But my favorite part is after, breathing in and out

And the room is a disaster, clothes lying all around

And I whisper those three words that you long to hear so much and as were lying there our fingertips they touch

Yeah as were lying there our fingertips they touch.

Lori

Oh Lordy Lordly, lovely Lori I love you are you sure that your with the right guy

I’ve been trying to tell you for so long but you’ve been with him since senior high

I could say that I’m the better man but we’d both know it’d be a lie

Oh but Lordy Lordly, lovely Lori I love you and I hope that you give me a try.

Took a shot of whiskey with your eyes closed, shook your head and kind of pinched your nose.

You were wild and beautiful I suppose, oh Lori will you come with me

he came in and kissed your chin I wish you looked at me like you looked at him

But I’ll take you places he’s never been oh if you just come with me.

Not wasting no more time I’m gonna tell you what’s inside.

Ever since I met you I’ve had Lori on my mind.

He’s got ambition he’s got dreams, he’s got more upstairs then me it seems

when it comes to love he don’t know what it means oh Lori I’ll make you believe.

How can you think that he’s better than me, you’ve only ever had one fish in the sea

so stay in school or come swim free, Lori will you swim with me.

I’ll make you a promise, every day I’ll make you smile.

It’s hard for me to see you haven’t smiled in such a while.

If your answers no then I’ll fade behind the stage

watch you from afar, try to forget I felt this way

Then you stop me by the door and you ask me to stay. Please stay.

And I say Lordy Lordly, lovely Lori I love you are you sure that your with the right guy

I’ve been trying to tell you for so long, there’s a hundred reasons why

You’ll see that I’m the better man when you look me in the eye

Oh but Lordy Lordly, lovely Lori I love you please won’t you give me a try.

Oh now Lordy Lordly, lovely Lori I love you I just want to be your guy.

The Grim Man

If God created all things, then he also made the Devil.  In the beginning just the two of them with the

cosmos theirs to meddle.

The devil he bore witness to the making of all things, and marvelled at their beauty and the joy

design brings.

So the devil set his will to the creation he too sought, instead gave birth to jealousy when he found

that he could not.

Singing Amen, Amen, and Hallelujah

God’s favorite creation was a man that bore his face.  His voice was song itself – tenor, baritone, and bass.

To the stars he’d sing the sweetest melodies ever conceived, and the sound carried a joy that made the devil gnash his teeth.

So Malice was the next thing that the devil he brought forth, as he made his plans to rid the man of his gift from the Lord.

Singing Amen, Amen, and Hallelujah

Hallelujah, is what he’d often sing.  What’s it too ya, you say the word but don’t know a God damn thing.

A cloak so black and grim was presented to the man, the first lie ever told promised understand Gods plan

And when he placed in on his back he breathed his final breath while the devil marveled at himself for he created death

The grim man he lamented for he could no longer sing.  Forced to roam, collect the dead and present them as offering.

Singing Amen, Amen, and Hallelujah

Men will age, wars will wage, and the grim man will be there.  Cursed as the first soul to die he’ll know only despair.

Yet in his heart he longs to sing the sweetest melodies and when the end of days arise he’ll finally have his peace.

And look up to the sky and sing a note on high…

He’ll sing Amen, Amen and Hallelujah.
